استدعى بعض الخلفاء شعراء مصر، فصادفهم شاعر فقير بيده جرّة فارغة ذاهباً إلى البحر ليملأها ماء فتبعهم إلى
أن وصلوا إلى دار الخلافة، فبالغ الخليفة في إكرامهم والإنعام عليهم، ولّما رأى الرجل والجرّة على كتفه ونظر إلى ثيابه الرّثة قال: من أنت؟ وما حاجتك؟ فأنشد الرجل:
ولما رأيتُ القوم شدوا رحالهم * إلى بحرِك الطَّامي أتيتُ بِجرتّي
فقال الخليفة : املأوا له الجّرة ذهباً وفضّة.
فحسده بعض الحاضرين وقال : هذا فقير مجنون لا يعرف قيمة هذا المال، وربّما أتلفه وضيّعه.
فقال الخليفة: هو ماله يفعل به ما يشاء، فمُلئت له جرّته ذهباً، وخرج إلى الباب ففرّق المال لجميع الفقراء، وبلغ الخليفة ذلك، فاستدعاه وسأله على ذلك فقال:
يجود علينا الخيرون بمالهم * ونحن بمال الخيرين نجود
فأعجب الخليفة بجوابه، وأمر أن تُملأ جرّتُه عشر مرّات، وقال : الحسنة بعشر أمثالها
اﻟﻨﺎﺱ ﻟﻠﻨﺎﺱ ﻣﺎﺩﺍﻡ ﺍﻟﻮﻓﺎﺀ ﺑﻬﻢ ….
ﻭﺍﻟﻌﺴﺮ ﻭﺍﻟﻴﺴﺮ ﺍﻭﻗﺎﺕ ﻭﺳﺎﻋﺎﺕ
ﻭأﻛﺮﻡ ﺍﻟﻨﺎﺱ ﻣﺎ ﺑﻴﻦ ﺍﻟﻮﺭى ﺭﺟﻞ …
ﺗﻘﻀى ﻋﻠى ﻳﺪﻩ ﻟﻠﻨﺎﺱ حاجات
ﻻ‌ ﺗﻘﻄﻌﻦ ﻳﺪ ﺍﻟﻤﻌﺮﻑ ﻋﻦ أﺣــﺪ …
ﻣـﺎ ﺩﻣـﺖ ﺗـﻘﺪﺭ ﻭﺍﻻ‌ﻳـﺎﻡ ﺗـــﺎﺭﺍﺕ
